New business insights means growth for a creative business

Debbie was working part-time before enrolling on the RBSA’s Professional Development Programme.  She had always enjoyed drawing and painting for fun, but had no previous experience of working within the creative industries.

A desire to develop her artistic skills and take a more serious approach to her work motivated Debbie to apply for the programme.  She hoped to obtain more insight into the business side of the industry, having felt that she had missed out on acquiring this knowledge by not going to art school.  Debbie had reached a point where she needed this kind of information from a reliable source, in order to move forward her career prospects.

Debbie thought that the course was great – well co-ordinated and providing support as and when it was needed.  The artists who delivered the workshops gave Debbie excellent practical support with budgeting, planning, running exhibitions, networking and seeking out commissioning opportunities.   Debbie expects the impact of the programme on her practice to grow as she develops her creative work over the coming months.

“I feel more confident now and will be more able to approach businesses and galleries”.

Already, Debbie has had some of her artwork printed for greetings cards.  She believes that programmes like this are important because they offer great networking opportunities and the chance to get to know the professionals at the RBSA Gallery.  They encourage new talent, especially from those who missed out on formal art training following school.  This programme enabled Debbie to develop her creative talent without needing time off from her day job.

“I have enjoyed meeting the artists and personnel from the RBSA who have run and assisted on the course, and all of the aspiring artists who along with me did the programme”.
